Pet Sounds

Prior to the Beach Boy's album Pet Sounds, the Beach Boys were a group that had a unique sound. They were a harmonizing group and were known for their love song, prior to Pet Sounds. The album Pet Sounds paints a vivid picture of the surfing scene that was gaining popularity in the 60's. Their music catered to the surfer’s culture among many other demographics. Brian Wilson was the biggest role player. He was the songwriter, arranger, and producer for the Beach Boys music. I think it is safe to say that without Brian Wilson, there was no Beach Boys. Brian Wilson was the leader and he led the Beach Boys to a great amount of #1 hits. He also was the driving force behind the group’s creativity, which is very impressive seeing that he learned a lot of his knowledge on his own and through observation. In my opinion what set Pet Sounds apart from other albums is the instrumentation and his elaborate recording techniques. He used a lot of instruments that were unorthodox and different. His unique choice of instruments set their music aside from other music of that time. He also used techniques in his recording process that you could possibly deem ahead of his time. Brian knew how to put things together and make excellent music. As a listener Pet Sound just really puts me in the 60's. I was born In the 80's and this music was before I even lived, but Pet Sounds makes me think about what times were like and paints the image of what it was like in the 60's. As an industry professional Pet Sounds is inspiring. It reminds me that what normal people consider being not normal or madness is beautiful. There is a level of appreciation that is due to Brian Wilson and the Beach Boy's genius.
